Emergency medical technicians, or EMTs, provide emergency medical care to patients, and when necessary, transport them to medical facilities. Your patients will most commonly be suffering from heart attacks, bullet wounds, slips and falls, or be in labor. Emergency Medical Technician Schools
Emergency medical technician schools can help prepare you for all levels of EMT care. The training you earn will depend on the amount of time you want to study, and subsequently, your desired job opportunities.
EMT-Basic Training will teach you, in just months, the most basic skills needed to work as an EMT, mostly involving respiratory, trauma, and cardiac emergencies, including:- bleeding and fractures
- airway obstruction
- cardiac arrest
- emergency childbirth
EMT-Intermediate Training requirements vary by state, but typically requires 30 to 350 hours of training. You will be trained in advanced airway devices, intravenous fluids, and some medications.
EMT-Paramedic Training is the most advanced in the field. Training is found at community colleges or technical schools, and typically lasts 1 to 2 years. Many Emergency Medical Technician Schools award associate's degrees at this level. In addition to clinical and field experience, you should take classes in anatomy, physiology, and advanced medical skills.
Emergency Medical Technicians' Job Prospects
The Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics maintains employment for EMTs and paramedics will grow faster than average, and that the best job prospects will be for those with the most advanced training and education.
