Dental Lab Technician Education

What Are the Responsibilities of a Dental Lab Technician?

The responsibilities of dental lab technicians vary widely, as different dental offices offer different services and specializations. Dental lab technicians rarely work directly with patients, but instead work alongside dentists to provide excellent care and service. They often create molds of patients' teeth and soft tissue structure, using the impressions to create removable full or partial dentures, crowns, bridges or orthodontic appliances.

What Skills are Necessary to Become a Dental Lab Technician?

Professionals who are successful in a career as a dental lab technician typically have good hand/eye coordination. Color perception is important, as is a steady hand and the ability to use small tools with dexterity. A dental lab technician must also be able to practice patience with their work and have the ability to attend to small details.

What Courses Will I Take During the My Dental Lab Technician Education?

While there are four year bachelor's degree programs that offer a degree in dental technology, dental lab technicians generally receive their education through a two-year program at a vocational school, technical college or community college. Upon graduation, they receive either an associate's degree or a certificate of completion.

Students take courses that cover information on a wide range of topics, including:
  • Dental anatomy
  • Dental materials
  • Dental techniques
  • Orthodontics and pedodontics
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Ceramics techniques
How Will the Education I Receive Help Advance My Career?

Dental lab technology programs are offered at numerous colleges, universities and technical schools across the country. These programs offer an enriching experience, providing students with the opportunity to learn through hands-on involvement in a laboratory setting. Students gain experience in creating natural-looking dental restorations, such as dentures and crowns. In addition to receiving a broad overview of the topics and techniques pertaining to a career in dental lab technology, students may be able to specialize in a specific area, including dental ceramics or orthodontics. By receiving an education in dental lab technology, you will be qualified to work in this exciting and innovative field.
